The second documentary I made for National Geographic Channel was “Kardelen.” In some of Turkey’s deep redoubts school attendance is forbidden to girls which forces them to stay at home assisting adult women with housekeeping chores. Young girls grow up illiterate and helpless and at the mercy of fathers, brothers and husbands. We interviewed girls of various social profiles in different locations of Turkey and were able to show, through the testimony of girls who had been schooled thanks to a Kardelen scholarship, the advantages of literacy.
Through repeated television airings this story gained great strength; published in the National Geographic Magazine the story would have been beyond the reach of illiterate women. Millions of people have seen this documentary directed by Ivan Bouso thanks to television.
