In addition to specific communications of two or more hours, I usually give weekend workshops. In a first option, we work a whole day, usually a Saturday; and in the second option, also Sunday morning.
For an eight-hour communication, I charge €1200 net plus food and accommodation. Depending on the distance between where I live (Banyoles, Girona) and your location, it is often advisable for me to arrive on Friday afternoon to sleep in a nearby hotel.
For twelve hours, my fee is €1,500 net.
In addition, travel by car, train or plane and any accommodation expenses (lodging and food) must be considered if applicable.
I have no problem with the number of attendees, but if it is not a crowd, communication is always more fluid. Between 20 and 30 is a reasonable number, although I am aware that it is convenient to divide among many to make the numbers work. Sometimes it is possible to obtain grants from city councils, provincial councils, ministries, etc. or request collaboration from companies related to photography.
Other times (which slightly increases my fees), the organizers propose an additional open conference for all audiences the day before the workshop begins. It is not uncommon for people to sign up for the paid experience after hearing me, if there are still places available; but by organizing a public event, it is easier to request financial aid from the city council's culture department or any other organization.
Normally, I focus on these topics, which can be covered in eight and twelve hours each:
- Working for National Geographic. A Travel Photography workshop based on my two decades of experience collaborating with the most prestigious institution in the world.
- Travel Photography. In this case, the vision is broader, and the workshop is designed to improve participants' skills in this specialty. It is based on the content of the book "The Secrets of Travel Photography."
- Anatomy of a photograph. The most popular, based on my latest book. A workshop that dissects the grammar of the image, full of tips to solve the mistakes we photographers make, whether due to lack of practice or ignorance. We would talk about everything, from color to composition, delving into how to photograph people, portraits, landscapes, or street photography.
- Help Me Look. I have been fortunate to work for some of the most important media outlets in Spain and the world. This experience led me to write a "bible" that was awarded by the CEF as the best Photography book of 2020. In this workshop, I propose how to tell stories and organize reports for eventual publication in the press, exhibitions, or audiovisuals. And also how to choose the best photographs we have taken.
- The Colors and You. Another of my books and a debate on the influence of colors in photos. An introduction to the psychology, history, and practical use of color. Its choice emphasizes or diminishes human emotions. Ignoring these rules contributes to a photograph being a failure. For this reason, it is so important to know the peculiarities of color.
- The Photographer's Gaze. A workshop designed for participants with some experience and a proposal after attending any of the previous ones. It is suitable for beginners, but perhaps they will not get all the benefits they could because it is basically an analysis of the work of numerous relevant photographers. The main idea is for attendees to learn how to achieve photographs with a personal style. It is usually very well-liked.
- Photography in Transition. Through the visualization of my own work, as well as other real cases, I will take a journey from the first retouched photographic images to the new artificial intelligence records. We will touch on topics such as manipulation, censorship, or ethics and discuss equipment, supports, and data storage, as well as the intentional use of images, legal issues, and ideas for the future.
All these workshops are theoretical. I talk little about post-production techniques and technology in general. Of course, I can answer questions of this nature, but I never go into too much detail because, on the one hand, there are professionals more expert than me in software management, and I prefer to focus on the photographic essence.
Thanks to my focus on these practical concepts, beginners and experts can attend all my talks. Everyone usually gets something out of what is discussed.
I prepare each workshop according to the available hours. It is also possible to dedicate time to reviewing the attendees' work. In this case, it should be noted that if each person presents five photos, and we spend about ten minutes discussing them, we will see between five and six portfolios in an hour.
And, of course, parts of these listed workshops can be combined. The details can be finalized later.
