Oman was founded as an Imamate in 751 and is the oldest state in the Arab world. It is an absolute monarchy in which the Sultan of Oman exercises absolute authority, but its parliament has some legislative and oversight powers.
In November 2010, the United Nations Development Program named Oman, out of 135 countries worldwide, as the country that had improved the most over the preceding 40 years.
According to 2010 international indices, Oman is one of the most developed and stable countries in the Arab world.
